The Wellspring
Journal

A monthly read for your mind, body, and relationships, written by your therapist, not an algorithm.
From My Desk

Hi, I'm glad you're here.

Welcome back to The Wellspring Journal. Last month we talked about capacity, about how much you actually have to give. This month, we're going a layer deeper: what it looks like when there's genuinely less to give, not because of a busy week, but because something heavier has settled in.

No fixing required. Just take a breath. You're in the right place.

This Month's Reflection

The Weight That Doesn't Lift

Everyone has hard weeks. But sometimes low doesn't pass with a good night's sleep or a lighter schedule. It lingers, flattens things, and starts to feel less like a mood and more like a place you live.

Naming it isn't giving up. It's the first honest step toward help.

You don't need the perfect words for what you're feeling. You just need to stop assuming you're supposed to push through it alone.

Beyond the Surface

Signs It Might Be More Than a Rough Patch

Depression doesn't always look like sadness. It often shows up quieter, in the things that used to feel automatic. A few signs worth paying attention to:

  • Things you used to enjoy feel flat or pointless
  • Getting through basic tasks feels disproportionately hard
  • Sleep, appetite, or energy have shifted and stayed shifted
  • It's been weeks, not days, and it isn't lifting
If this sounds familiar, try "How long has this actually been going on?" A timeline can tell you more than a single hard day can.
Practice This Week

A Simple Self-Check-In

You don't need a clinical assessment to start paying attention. Try this instead:

  • Notice how long the low feeling has lasted
  • Name one thing that used to feel easy and doesn't anymore
  • Ask if you'd worry about a friend who described this
  • Consider a free screening if the answer is yes

A screening doesn't diagnose you. It just gives you a place to start.

Relationship Corner

Noticing It in Someone You Love

Depression can be easier to miss in someone else, especially if they're still showing up. A few things worth noticing in the people around you:

  • They've quietly stopped doing things they used to enjoy
  • Their energy or mood has changed and stayed changed
  • They downplay how they're doing when you ask
  • They seem to be going through the motions
  • Checking in twice matters more than checking in once

You don't have to fix it. You just have to notice, and ask again.

October Is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month

You Don't Have to Diagnose Yourself to Get Checked

Depression is one of the most common, and most treatable, mental health conditions there is. A few numbers worth sitting with:

A screening isn't a diagnosis. It's a starting point, a way of putting words to something that's been hard to name, and a reason to reach out if what you find surprises you.

Free, confidential screenings are available through Mental Health America at mhanational.org/screening.
988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, call or text 988, available every day, all day.

If this brings something up for you, please reach out to one of these resources or to a therapist you trust. You don't have to carry it alone.
